The act of negotiating can occur in many forms. Whether it is an agreement between two people or a contract between two businesses, negotiation is always characterized by two opposing parties with different perspectives. As such, the negotiating process will always be messy and fraught with misunderstanding.

But where does negotiation begin? How do people maintain resolve when confronted with the opposition? These are all questions to ask before getting into the nitty-gritty of any legal agreement or contract. In order to answer these questions, we must first determine the nature of the negotiation.

Negotiation is a human activity that involves the joint effort of two or more people to reach a negotiated agreement. Negotiation can be a simple task, such as a dispute between friends over a bill at a restaurant, or it can take place between two powerful corporations who have competing interests. When negotiating with groups of people there are many techniques that can be used to best facilitate the negotiations process. One of the most notable ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of negotiations is by utilizing what is known as “The Five Techniques for Elimination of Conflict” from Harvard Business Review magazine. The following are the five techniques for elimination of conflict:

Bargaining

Using coercive tactics, people attempt to force their opponent to make concessions. Bargaining relies on one party working against another.

 

Cooperation

Cooperative negotiations are achieved when individuals attempt to achieve common ground. By working together, two or more people can achieve a win-win situation that benefits both parties. This requires both parties to focus on the larger goal rather than just themselves during the negotiation process. Cooperation is achieved through teamwork and trust.

Compromise

This technique focuses on the middle ground and the negotiation process as a whole. The goal of compromise is always to find an agreement that will benefit both parties. Often times, compromise can be difficult to achieve. However, it is more common than one would expect. This is because people often find it easier to compromise than go through with a conflict or conflict resolution process. People often prefer this method because there are seldom any “winners” and “losers” involved in a compromise, unlike disputes and conflicts.

 

Collaboration

Collaboration takes place only when both parties agree and work together toward a common goal or purpose during negotiations. This can be achieved if both sides are willing to share useful information, collaborate on issues that cannot be resolved by one party alone, and commit to working together toward a common goal.

 

Competition

Two or more people who wish to obtain something compete against another person or group of people in order to obtain it. Competition is characterized by an “us vs. them” mentality where one party wants the other harmed, defeated, or removed from the process. In this method of negotiation, people must work hard in order to achieve their goals and will often resort to underhanded tactics in order do so.

Negotiation has been a part of history, dating back to the earliest human societies. It is a social interaction that allows groups or individuals to resolve conflicts and create win-win situations. Because negotiation is such an important part of society, it is important to learn about negotiation and how it can be utilized in everyday life.

The Harvard Negotiation Project (HNP) was established in 1981 at Harvard Law School and consists of researchers and practitioners interested in applying knowledge about the process and practice of negotiation to the work of lawyers, negotiators, mediators, institutional leaders and other problem solvers. Each year HNP hosts multiple workshops where experts from around the world come together to share ideas about negotiation theory and practice.

The HNP has consistently exhibited a great deal of success in bringing leaders from all over the world together to learn about negotiation and apply their knowledge in the workplace. Participants have included Harvard professors, top-level executives from large international corporations, and distinguished practitioners such as lawyers, mediators, and negotiators.

Within HNP dozens of research papers have been published that reflect the collective wisdom gained from these workshops and other programs related to negotiation including:

Many organizations, such as the U.S. Department of State and leading governmental institutions in Europe, Asia and Latin America use HNP materials and techniques to create a more dynamic environment for negotiations within their organizations.

 

The project has published hundreds of articles about negotiation theory and practice. The Harvard Negotiation Project has also produced multiple videos, including “Harvard Mediation Project: Videos on Video” that explore the nature of conflict resolution.

If you’re an adult and you still get emotionally involved in your parents’ fights, hold grudges against your old friends, or allow past negative events to affect the present situation, then you might have what is called “adult child syndrome.”

But don’t worry! The good news is that it’s a very common issue and with a little guidance a person can make a full recovery. In fact, in some cases people who were diagnosed with this syndrome in adulthood have been able to overcome their issues within six months.

So, what exactly is adult child syndrome?

The term “adult child syndrome” has been used to describe someone who acts like a helpless little child when things don’t go their way. For example, if your significant other is late getting home from work one night, you might accuse them of being with another woman. After all, it’s not uncommon for parents to use this tactic on their kids, so why wouldn’t you do the same thing?

On top of that, if your significant other doesn’t call you back within 30 minutes of your phone conversation with them, then you might become angry and believe they’re trying to ignore you. But you haven’t considered the obvious, which is that perhaps your significant other was in a situation where they couldn’t answer their phone right then. Maybe they were driving or at a restaurant. Or maybe their battery died and they didn’t have the charger with them.

In this case, it’s real simple: you’re acting like a child who didn’t get their way. And that’s perfectly fine if you’re five years old, but when you’re an adult, childish behavior simply doesn’t work anymore.

Now imagine this scenario with your boss at work. Let’s just say that you’ve recently applied for a raise or promotion and your boss is finally ready to talk to you about it. But before you get a chance to talk, your boss’s cell phone rings and it’s her husband on the other line.

So what do you do? Do you walk out of the office and tell yourself that your boss is clearly ignoring you because she doesn’t want to give you a raise? Or do you patiently wait for her to finish her call and then start talking about your raise?

That’s pretty much the difference between an adult who suffers from adult child syndrome and one who doesn’t. The adult child will act like a little spoiled brat, but the non-adult child will be understanding and patient. That’s because they know that life isn’t always fair, even as an adult. Conflicts will arise, you’ll have to wait your turn sometimes, and there are some situations that are just more important than others.

Does that mean that your boss is being unfair by taking a phone call from her husband? No. It just means that it’s not the right time for you to talk about your raise. You can save it for another time, or tell your boss that you’d like to talk about it now so you don’t have to bother her again. But there is no point in acting out if you’re upset because she didn’t give it to you right then and there. That accomplishes nothing except making yourself look foolish.

The good news is that adult child syndrome can be overcome. Here’s how:

* Remind yourself that life isn’t always fair. There will be times when your boss won’t give you a raise because she thinks it doesn’t fit within her budget or the company policy forbids it. When this happens, remember that you have two options: submit to the situation or reach out for help.

You probably won’t get the raise right away, but reaching out for help will at least alleviate your frustration and make things easier on both of you later on. Plus, asking for help shows that you care about your career success and are willing to do what it takes to succeed.

* Know your boundaries. If your boss is busy with an important deadline and can’t talk to you about your raise, then make sure you don’t ask again until she’s done with it. If she leaves the office to go to lunch, then let her know that you’ll contact her later on.

* Understand the situation from the other person’s point of view. Sometimes our emotions get mixed up with our expectations and things can get twisted into something that it’s not. When this happens, take some time to reflect on why that person is doing what they’re doing before you jump to conclusions.

For example, if your boss is busy with a deadline and can’t talk to you about your raise because it conflicts with important work, then you might begin to worry that your boss doesn’t like you and just doesn’t want to give you a raise. But this is probably not the case at all. In fact, it’s very possible that she doesn’t know about the raise yet because she hasn’t been officially notified of its approval.

In other words, don’t assume that someone is automatically going to do or say something negative just because something negative has happened in the past.

* Remember that relationships are more important than things. If you’re unhappy about something happening with your boss, don’t automatically assume it’s because your relationship is going downhill. Maybe you’re having a conflict with someone else at work, or maybe your boss is sick and needs to take care of herself first before she can think about you. In any case, don’t let a minor problem keep you from pursuing a meeting with her. It’s better to be persistent and have problems later on instead of being too passive and never getting what you want.

Following these guidelines can help you overcome adult child syndrome if it’s hampering your career development. But it will help you most of all if you don’t let it bother you in the first place. After all, if you’re already aware that life isn’t always fair, then you won’t feel disappointed when things don’t go your way.

And if you know how to respect your boss’s boundaries, then you won’t have to worry about being bombarded by phone calls or emails. And if you can understand their point of view, then they won’t be left wondering why you became upset with them.

It has become a $15 trillion dollar industry with institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which effectively became banks when they were publicly traded. The world is still trying to recover from the financial crisis that started in 2008.

The financial crisis was confusing at first glance; it seemed like no one knew how or why it happened. Mainstream economists put out theories linking the problem with this or that sector. Some people went as far as to blame it on “laissez faire.” However, the credit crunch may have something to do with at least one country that does not share an economic philosophy or worldview that others do.

Since America is the largest economy in the world, it has a lot of wealth and different kinds of money. For example, American dollars are used throughout the world. Most countries have their own currency, so if there is a run on American dollars, everyone has to scramble to exchange their cash for another kind. However, every country uses another currency in order to keep up with payments. So if the dollar becomes less valuable, there is nothing to replace it with. This causes a credit crunch, which means international trade is stalled.

This causes trade to stall because everyone scrambles to exchange their dollars for another currency. This is especially difficult for countries that have increasingly relied on exports, which are becoming increasingly pricier for consumers in developed nations who are struggling with the effects of the financial crisis. The International Monetary Fund has provided billions of dollars to countries facing these challenges, but this just covers up the problem temporarily.

So how did this happen? America has been printing money since Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Unfortunately, this led to something called inflation. Simply put, inflation is too much money in circulation.

This causes prices to increase because more dollars are needed to buy food, fuel, etc. This is bad because more dollars are needed to buy the same amount of goods. High inflation rates mean more dollars are needed for anything you want or need, which makes it less valuable. Eventually, this leads to the dollar losing value altogether; there is nothing that can replace it.

This can be seen happening today with countries like Russia and China trading mainly in their own currencies instead of the U.S dollar. Every country depends on exports to have a strong economy. If there is a run against the dollar, exports are halted, which hampers the economies of other nations.

America is not to blame for any of these things; it’s nearly impossible for one nation to be solely responsible for economic troubles in another country. However, America does have some responsibility because it has the largest economy in the world. Some would disagree that America is even an economic superpower, but that debate is for another time. The fact remains that America has immense wealth and resources; it’s impossible not to notice this when you travel around the world.

Are we seeing a decline in global economics and an increasingly unstable situation on a global scale? Others argue that America has done nothing wrong and that the credit crunch was merely a product of poor decision-making by both individuals and institutions.

Either way, it is apparent from these debates that a global financial crisis affects everyone. It’s important to remember that international trade is a two-way street; it relies on both parties playing their part for it to work properly. A global financial crisis requires global cooperation in order to succeed.

David A. Crockett is a member of the Lake County Libertarian Party, having joined in 2010. He has previously run for office twice under the Libertarian banner, once running for Mayor of Highland Park, Illinois in 2009 and again running for Lake County Commissioner in 2011.

David also writes for The Liberty Papers website and writes mostly political content. David’s current projects include his forthcoming series “Common Cents”, which aims to inform people about the value of their dollar, as well as encouraging them to exercise frugality.

Another project David is working on is “Case Studies On Liberty”, which features interviews with men and women who have achieved great things through hard work and perseverance. David is currently a student at Northern Illinois University.
